Eight Recognized As WCHA Scholar-Athletes Courtesy: Northern Michigan University Athletics Courtesy: NMU BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Eight members of the Northern Michigan University hockey program were named Scholar-Athletes of the year by the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, as announced by the league Thursday. Those recognized include Vincent de Mey, Andre Ghantous, Nolan Kent, Joseph Nardi, Ben Newhouse, Ty Readman, John Roberts and Tanner Vescio. To be eligible for recognition, an individual must have completed at least one year at their present institution and maintain a grade point average of at least 3.50 for the previous two semesters. This is the second career scholar-athlete nod for Newhouse, a graduate student with a mathematics focus, and Readman, a junior Financial Management major. Senior captain Nardi, an entrepreneurship major, was honored as WCHA Scholar-Athlete for the third-consecutive year.

Ghantous Recognized As WCHA Forward of the Month

The 5-9 sophomore from Glendale, California was given recognition by the WCHA for the month of February as his 16 points in 10 games, including five goals and 11 assists ranked among the league’s top-scorers for the final month of the season. Ghantous led all WCHA opponents in points (16) and was three ahead of the next closest scorer in linemate Joseph Nardi. He also boasted a league-best 11 assists and his shorthanded tally at Bemidji State University on Feb. 12 was tied for a conference-high.

At 4:36 of the first period the Wildcats hit twine as sophomore AJ Vanderbeck gave NMU the 1-0 lead with 15:24 to play in the opening frame. Just 56 seconds later the Wildcats extended the lead to two-goals when Mikey Colella scored his first collegiate goal, with assists to Joseph Nardi and Andre Ghantous as the three secured their respective point-streaks early.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team opened their final true road series of the regular season with a convincing 5-1 victory over 17th-ranked Bemidji State University, Friday evening. Five Wildcat skaters lit the lamp in the contest while two Mikey Colella recorded his first career point in the contest, an assist on the first goal of the night. In a very defensive first period, the Wildcats held the Beavers to just seven shots on net as both teams remained scoreless heading to the locker rooms at the end of 20 minutes.
