Collins to back Becerra for HHS Secretary

Collins said she decided to vote to confirm Becerra after several conversations with him on a range of issues, including lowering prescription drug costs and expanding health care access to rural areas across the country. She is the first Republican to come out in support of his confirmation.  “During our one-on-one meeting, and in three subsequent conversations, Mr. Becerra and I discussed several shared goals that I hope we can accomplish in the Biden Administration. They include lowering the price of prescription drugs for patients and reducing our dependence on foreign countries for drug manufacturing,  she said in a statement. I also urged Mr. Becerra to support additional funding for health care providers during the pandemic, particularly in rural areas.

Senate panel unanimously advances Biden pick for deputy Energy chief

ADVERTISEMENT Turk, who served on the National Security Council and in the State Department during the Obama administration, became deputy executive director of the International Energy Agency after Obama left office. The Senate panel has frequently been at odds in the past over President Biden Barrasso, who has been one such critic, spoke positively of Turk on Thursday for expressing dedication “to all types of energy and the need to keep America energy dominant.” “I especially appreciate his commitment to carbon capture utilization and sequestration technology as well as the need to construct CO2 pipelines to move that captured carbon,” Barrasso said.

Schumer vows quick Senate action on House gun reforms

ADVERTISEMENT Progress is only possible on this issue if the measure in question is narrow and protects the rights of law-abiding gun owners, spokesman Steve Kelly said in an email.  The public s attitude toward gun reform has shifted considerably in recent years amid a long string of mass shootings at schools, churches, synagogues and music venues around the country. A new Morning Consult-Politico poll, released Wednesday, found that 84 percent of voters support the expansion of background checks, including 77 percent of Republicans figures consistent with other public surveys in recent years.  Democrats are leaning on those numbers in hopes they ll convince wary Senate Republicans to reconsider their past opposition to an issue that s gaining political currency.

This week: Biden, Democrats face decision point on coronavirus relief

We re going to bring a budget resolution to the floor next week and then it will send it over to the Senate. Then, if they change it, then we ll take it back and address it. But by the end of the week, we will be finished with the budget resolution, she said.  The reconciliation instructions included in the budget resolution will likely sign off on $1.9 trillion in spending, in line with Biden s coronavirus proposal. Congressional committees would then be tasked with drafting pieces of the aid package.  Schumer hasn t formally locked the Senate into approving a budget resolution, but has warned that the chamber could vote as soon as this week. Passing the budget resolution through the Senate this week, aides acknowledge, would be an aggressive timeline that would include a marathon session known as a vote-a-rama.
