Where did the flu go? Cases drop by 98% in Onondaga County (chart)

Syracuse, N.Y. In a typical season, about 180 flu patients end up in a hospital bed at Crouse Hospital. Another 700 will get positive tests for flu.
Not this year.
“Crouse has not had a single flu case this season,” said Dr. Seth Kronenberg, Crouse’s chief operating officer and chief medical officer. “We have not had a patient hospitalized for the flu and we have not had a positive test for the flu.”
The near-absence of a common scourge like the flu, which sickens thousands and hospitalizes hundreds in Onondaga County most years, is a welcome relief. Health officials had feared a “twindemic” of flu and Covid-19 cases crashing together this winter and overwhelming hospital beds. That didn’t come to pass, and hospitals were able to better focus on the thousands hospitalized for Covid-19 without precious bed space being taken up by flu patients.
