A 39-year-old Edmonton man charged in a suspected hate-motivated attack last December has pleaded guilty to a count of assault and will spend another month behind bars.
Joseph Gladue, 39, was charged with assaulting a 48-year-old Black man in the Parkdale neighbourhood on Dec. 16. A second charge of uttering threats of death or bodily harm were withdrawn. The 180-day sentence, issued March 24, is less 148 days for pretrial credit.

The victim was walking in his residential neighbourhood around 10 p.m. when a man approached yelling racist insults and pushed him without being provoked, police said at the time. Fearing for his life, he ran away and was chased into his backyard but a witness intervened and stopped the assault from continuing.

City police have charged a man after investigating a third alleged hate-motivated attack in Edmonton in the past two weeks.
EPS Northwest division beat officers responded to a report of an assault in the Parkdale neighbourhood around 10 p.m. Wednesday, said a news release issued Friday.

It was reported to police that a Black man was walking on a residential street near his home when another man approached him yelling racially motivated insults. The suspect pushed the man without provocation, police said.

EDMONTON Police have charged a 38-year-old man after the third hate-motivated incident in Edmonton this month. The victim, a Black man, reported he was walking near his home in Parkdale just after 10 a.m. Wednesday when a man began yelling “racially-motivated obscenities” at him and pushed him without provocation, the Edmonton Police Service said. The victim ran away, but the attacker, who was also yelling death threats, followed him to his backyard and assaulted him, police said. Northwest Division beat officers were in the area on an unrelated matter and witnessed the chase and drove to the home to assist. The attacker was taken into custody at the scene.
