Muncy School Board considers tax increase | News, Sports, Jobs

mreuther@sungazette.com The Muncy School Board is considering a slight increase in real estate taxes to help balance next year’s budget. Business Administrator Andrew Seese told the board at its meeting this week that as much as a 0.20 mill increase may be needed to help make up revenue shortfalls. Some school directors indicated that they don’t favor a tax hike, while others agreed it might be necessary. The district’s current millage rate stands at 16.72. The board has already voted not to exceed the index for raising taxes. Any tax hike to bring the millage rate beyond 17.53 would exceed the index.

Tie vote keeps Muncy elementary students in school | News, Sports, Jobs

pcrossley@sungazette.com MUNCY By a 4-4 vote the Muncy School voted to allow students in the elementary school to continue in-person instruction, even while students in the High School move to remote learning prior to and in the week following the holiday break. The vote came at the board meeting held remotely Monday night. Although the board voted on the issue at last week’s meeting, board members wanted to revisit the issue in light of the rise in cases of COVID-19 in the county. Students at the high school had returned this week to in-person learning, but are scheduled to be remote for Dec. 21 and 22 and Jan. 1 through 8. They will return to in-person instruction on Jan. 11. Students at the elementary level will be in school for those dates. Their holiday break begins on Dec. 23 and runs through Jan. 1, with return to school slated for Jan. 4.

Utah County Commission approves conservation easement for Bridal Veil Falls

The Utah County Commission unanimously approved a conservation easement for Bridal Veil Falls on Wednesday, putting an end to discussions about private development at the iconic Utah County landmark. Outgoing Commissioner Nathan Ivie put forward the conservation easement on Nov. 18 in one of his last moves as county commissioner. The conservation easement is a deed between Utah County and Utah Open Lands, a Salt Lake City-based nonprofit that works with landowners on conservation efforts. The conservation easement still needs to be signed by the Utah Open Lands Board of Directors, which is expected to happen next week. The vote came after over three hours of discussion about the conservation easement and proposed private development of Bridal Veil Falls.
