Juneteenth celebration set in Chelmsford

CHELMSFORD The town will hold its first-ever Juneteenth celebration, with performances, presentations, and exhibition of Black-owned businesses, and a commemoration of the end of legalized slavery in the U.S.
The event, organized by the town s Diversity, Racial Equity, and Inclusion Committee, is set for June 19, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Town Common.

The Library of Congress notes that Juneteenth is the commemoration of the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation to enslaved people.
On June 19, 1965, Union soldiers arrived in Texas, to announce President Lincoln s proclamation, originally given Jan. 1, 1863.
