Excitement was in the air Wednesday at St. Joseph County Commission on Aging in Sturgis and Three Rivers, as the facilities marked Mardi Gras with portable parties in a bag.
Mardi Gras Day, set for Feb. 16 this year, also is known informally as “Fat Tuesday,” the last day of the carnival season before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. Traditionally, people celebrate with sweets before giving up desserts and other items during the Lenten season.
While the commission on aging hoped to hold an indoor party for its senior population, the pandemic shifted the party plan to a drive-through, with gift bags filled with items to celebrate the occasion.
