Three men harvest bulls in first-ever Missouri elk hunting season

By Sara Karnes Springfield News-Leader Three men successfully hunted elk this past week, making this the first-ever harvested since the cervids were reintroduced to the state nearly a decade ago. Joseph Benthall, of Mount Vernon, was one of five permit holders for this elk hunting season and the first to shoot a bull, said Aaron Hildreth, elk specialist with the Missouri Department of Conservation. Only five bull elk could be taken. Following an unsuccessful archery season in October, the five hunters entered the rifle portion of the elk season. “Those same hunters had the opportunity to go back out and fulfill their tags,” Hildreth said about the firearms portion opening Dec. 12.

Cole County man and 2 others harvest elk in state s first elk hunting season © Provided by KRCG Columbia/Jefferson City A Cole County man was one of five people in the state selected for Missouri s first elk season in modern history.  The five randomly selected hunters from all corners of the state were given the opportunity to hunt elk beginning this October. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) randomly selected the few lucky winners from a pool of 19,215 permit applications including 33 for one resident-landowner antlered-elk permit and 19,182 for four general permits. The five lucky applicants drawn for a permit to harvest one antlered elk in Missouri were:
