CALIFORNIA The biggest effect the coronavirus pandemic had on National Police Week isn t that activities in California and elsewhere have been postponed, but the number of police officers whose lives and careers were cut short by the virus.
While their names won t be read at the National Police Officers Memorial Service until its Oct. 16 rescheduled date, they will be honored virtually during National Police Week from May 9-16 this year.
The coronavirus has been cited for six police officer line of duty deaths in California in 2021, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page. Nationally, 63 of the 119 police line of duty deaths in 2021 as of May 4, just under 53 percent, have been due to the virus.

March 6, 2021 - SACRAMENTO – On Friday, Governor Gavin Newsom issued the following statement regarding the death of Los Angeles Police Officer Jose Anzora:
“Jennifer and I are deeply saddened by the loss of Officer Jose Anzora after he was tragically injured while on-duty. Our thoughts are with his loved ones and his brothers and sisters at the Los Angeles Police Department as they mourn his loss and honor his service and sacrifice.”
On February 26, 2021, Officer Anzora, 31, was injured while directing traffic. Despite his courageous battle and the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries on March 3. Officer Anzora joined the Los Angeles Police Department in 2011 and spent most of his career in the Newton area.

LOS ANGELES, CA The Los Angeles Police Department is mourning the death of an officer who died Wednesday days after he was struck while doing traffic control in South Los Angeles.
Jose Anzora, 31, was struck while standing outside his vehicle near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Trinity Street at about 7:30 p.m. Friday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. He was hospitalized in serious condition and succumbed to his injuries Wednesday.
He was the second Los Angeles law enforcement officer killed on duty in a crash last week.
