Be prepared
Medical emergencies can occur without warning and patients often lose the ability to state their health care choices. As an emergency medicine physician, I observe family conflict and unnecessary suffering and distress created when patients arrive at the hospital without advance directives. Loved ones are left to wonder about the patient’s choices.
Be prepared. I urge all adults to have frank discussions with loved ones and document your choices in writing. Designate someone you trust to speak for you in a medical crisis and ensure that person knows your preferences if the situation is dire.
