LONDON, Jan 11, 2021 (BSS/AFP) – Leeds suffered a humiliating FA Cup exit against Crawley as the League Two side swept to a stunning 3-0 win, while eighth-tier Marine’s hopes of causing the competition’s greatest shock were crushed in a 5-0 defeat against Tottenham.
After the spiking coronavirus pandemic wreaked havoc with matches across the third round on Friday and Saturday, the FA Cup was back on more familiar ground on Sunday as Leeds became the competition’s latest big name to be knocked out by a feisty underdog.
Brighton survived a penalty shoot-out at Newport to book a place in the fourth round of the FA Cup, winning 4-3 on spot-kicks after the tie had been drawn 1-1 after 120 minutes.
It was a third round that was compromised and simultaneously enriched Derby County predictably exited at the hands of sixth-tier Chorley Town having had to field a youth team with their entire first-team squad, manager Wayne Rooney and most of the Under-23 team missing due to a Covid-19 outbreak. The Championship side s starting line-up had an average age of 19 – nine of whom were making their first-team debuts – and fell behind early on before a killer second six minutes from time. The gap between the sides was 83 places but as far as conventional giantkillings go this probably wasn t it. Nevertheless it ensured that the fourth round contained at least one representative from non-league football. Chorley s players didn t care and celebrated lustily afterwards. Leeds were humbled in a 3-0 defeat by fourth-tier Crawley Town on Monday (NZ time).
A brilliant solo strike from Nick Tsaroulla in the 50th minute put League Two Crawley in front after a first half in which Leeds had caused them few problems.
Three minutes later the West Sussex club were 2-0 up after an error from Leeds keeper Kiko Casilla who let an Ashley Nadesan shot squeeze in at the near post.
The impressive Nadesan had a hand in Crawley s third when his low shot was parried out by Casilla, only for Jordan Tunnicliffe to pounce and drill the ball home.
