A similar case in Syracuse ended last week with settlement between the diocese there and victims but legal negotiations between clergy sex abuse survivors and the Diocese of Rockville Centre show no signs of an agreement before the October deadline.
If the judge takes the highly unusual step of ending the proceedings because the survivors and the diocese can't reach an agreement, that would send some 600 cases back to state court for civil trials.
