Events to return to Ned s Point

Aidan Pollard Apr 13, 2021 MATTAPOISETT Weddings and other events will be able to return to Ned’s Point, following a decision by the Board of Selectmen. Selectmen approved weddings and planned gatherings of up to 50 people at an April 13 meeting. Town Administrator Mike Lorenco asked the board to make a decision regarding the return of planned events at the park, after he received multiple requests for weddings and other large gatherings. “I would imagine it’s going to increase as the weather gets nicer and people get towards the summer,” Lorenco said. Selectman Jordan Collyer noted that as weddings and other events begin to be permitted, the total number of people at Ned’s Point must remain under 150, per state regulation.

Mattapoisett Selectman announces cancer diagnosis

MATTAPOISETT Selectman John DeCosta announced he has been diagnosed with cancer. DeCosta took a moment at the beginning of an April 13 Selectmen’s meeting to inform residents of his diagnosis. “At this time, I am fully capable of carrying out my duties as a member of the Board of Selectmen,” he said, adding that he would continue to serve unless he is advised otherwise. “Obviously it’s very disturbing and very concerning for all of us,” Board Chair Paul Silva said. “We’ll surely pray for you.” Selectman Jordan Collyer agreed, saying DeCosta was in his and his family’s thoughts and prayers.

Debt exclusion question to be featured in Mattapoisett Town Meeting, Town Election

Aidan Pollard Apr 9, 2021 MATTAPOISETT The Selectmen approved a debt exclusion question of $450,000 for improvements to some of the town’s roads, to be voted on at Town Meeting and to be listed on the Town Election ballot. Selectmen Paul Silva and Jordan Collyer approved the item, which would aid a project to improve Main Street, Water Street, Beacon Street and Marion Road, in the absence of Selectman John DeCosta on April 9. The debt exclusion measure falls under Proposition 2.5, which places a 2.5% ceiling on property taxes taken by municipalities in the commonwealth The debt exclusion would allow the town to charge a higher tax rate than 2.5%, in order to pay off the debt from the project.

Summer 2021 not on hold as Tri-Town plans for seasonal events

Swimmers start the 2019 Mattapoisett Triathlon. Photo by: Grace Ballenger As the weather warms, the Tri-Town is already thinking about summer. But as the pandemic lingers, some of Marion, Mattapoisett and Rochester’s annual festivities may come with some caveats. Last year, traditions like Mattapoisett Harbor Days, the Rochester Country Fair and Marion’s Fourth of July parade were all cancelled by covid. This year, officials are working to make some of those events return. The Mattapoisett Selectmen tentatively approved plans for the Mattapoisett Lions Club’s Harbor Days events at a March 9 meeting. Harbor Days will go on from July 11-19, as long as the Lions Club continuously checks in with the town as the July events approach and covid numbers stay low. As a backup, Selectmen suggested the Lions build a plan to postpone the events to later in the summer, when attendees are more likely to have a covid vaccine.
