Wellington market which opened at alert level 2 failed test, farmers market group says

Ross Giblin/Stuff Manakau market gardener Tommy Young is down up to $7000 after Wellington City Council told fruit and vegetable sellers that they could not trade at the Sunday Harbourside Market due to Covid-19 restrictions. Farmers Market New Zealand chairman Jono Walker said the Harbourside Market was not a farmers market because it failed the criteria. “Farmers markets are food-only markets. That food is sold by the people who grow or make it and the food on sale is from a defined local region,” he said. The organisation had 26 of the country’s 30 genuine farmers’ markets as members, he said.
