HAMPTON â Walk along Fort Monroe in Hampton and youâll find numerous ways to enjoy the Chesapeake Bay. Swim at the beach, for example, or fish from a pier.
But a new coalition envisions the fort eventually offering much more, along with other sites around the nationâs largest estuary.
A group of conservation nonprofits, community leaders and lawmakers are pushing for the larger Chesapeake Bay area to become a part of the National Park Service â with Fort Monroe likely the southern anchor. It would be called the Chesapeake National Recreation Area, and they are working to draft legislation in Congress.
