China announced Friday it was imposing sanctions on several U.S. citizens in response to the U.S. sanctioning of seven deputy directors and the director of Beijing s Hong Kong liaison office.
The highest profile of those sanctioned is former U.S. commerce secretary Wilbur Ross.
In addition, China said it would target U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission Chairman Carolyn Bartholomew, former Congressional-Executive Commission on China staff director Jonathan Stivers, DoYun Kim from the National Democratic Institute, International Republican Institute associate director Adam King, Human Rights Watch China Director Sophie Richardson and the Hong Kong Democracy Council.
China on Friday imposed sanctions on seven US individuals and entity, under Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law, in response to the US penalties imposed on the Hong Kong officials over crackdown of democracy in the semi-autonomous region. This action comes in response to the US recent warning to companies about the risks of doing business in Hong Kong. Last week, the United States had imposed Hong Kong-related sanctions on seven individuals and warned companies of the risks of doing business in the territory. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson said that US has concocted the so-called Hong Kong Business Advisory to groundlessly smear Hong Kong s business environment, and illegally imposed sanctions on several officials of the Liaison Office of the Central People s Government in the Hong Kong SAR.
In response to the erroneous practice of the U.S. side, China has decided to take reciprocal countermeasures, and impose sanctions on seven U.S. individuals and entity according to the Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Friday.
On July 16, the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the U.S. Department of Commerce, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, issued the so-called Hong Kong Business Advisory. The U.S. Treasury Department s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) imposed financial sanctions on seven deputy directors of the Liaison Office of the Central People s Government in HKSAR by adding them to its list of Specially Designated Nationals.

ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA - MAY 23: U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross waits to speak at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration s 2019 Hurricane Season Outlook press conference May 23, 2019 in Arlington, Virginia. NOAA forecasters predicted between nine and 15 named storms are expected this season with four to eight of those becoming hurricanes. Two to four of the hurricanes could reach major status, meaning a Category 3 storm or higher.
In retaliation for US sanctions against Chinese officials in Hong Kong, China slapped sanctions on former Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and six other persons and companies on Friday.
Dubai: China s Foreign Ministry said the government is sanctioning seven people and entities, including former US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, in retaliation for a Biden administration warning to businesses about working in Hong Kong.
The move Friday invokes a new law to hit back against sanctions by the U.S. and its allies. The US has concocted the so-called Hong Kong Business Advisory to groundlessly smear Hong Kong s business environment, and illegally imposed sanctions on several officials, according to the statement. In response to the erroneous practice of the U.S. side, China has decided to take reciprocal countermeasures.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki responded later Friday that the U.S. remains undeterred by these actions and that the move only illustrates China s deteriorating investment climate and rising political risk.
