murder charges this evening over the death of a black motorist during a traffic stop. memphis officials are worried about civil unrest tonight. the district attorney says the city will release body cam video tomorrow. correspondent charles watson is in memphis tonight with the latest. good evening, charles. good evening, bret. all five memphis police officers face second degree murder charges in the death of nichols. steve announced the charges this afternoon after a grand jury convened this morning and indicted the officers in their roles in the beating death of nichols during the traffic stop earlier this month. today all five officers were booked in the shelby county jail this coming nearly a week after the memphis police department fired the officers following an internal investigation that revealed multiple policies were violated during a violent confrontation with nichols on january 7th. body cam video of the encounter has not yet been released but folks. described it
over the western united states. it may have come all the way from china. national security correspondent jennifer griffin has details from the pentagon. hi, jennifer. good evening, gill i can t believe. the pentagon says it has detected and been tracking for the past several days a chinese surveillance balloon that entered u.s. airspace and appears to have been sent bye bye jing to spy on sensitive sites in montana. one of three sites where the u.s. houses it s siloed nuclear weapons. nbc first reported the news. a senior u.s. defense official just briefed reporters on the balloon which is still hovering over the continental united states. adding the u.s. government has very high confidence that this surveillance balloon was sent by the peoples republic of china. the balloon is currently traveling at an altitude well above commercial air traffic and does not present a military or physical threat to people on the ground. instances of this kind of balloon activity have been
now they want to take the abortion fight to the states. pro-life supporters across the country descended on the nation s capitol 50th annual march for life and since roe v. wade was overturned. the dobbs decision brought abortion back to the state level where many think the next fight begins. we got to get to the state levels now. right? that s the the emphasis. that s why we are going in front of the capital is to show at each state level this is not over. it s only the beginning. currently 13 states have a complete abortion ban. five have partial bans. six states are in limbo pending current litigation. abortion is legal in the remaining states. new house majority leader steve scalise says despite the supreme court s ruling the issue is far from settled. the court didn t get rid of abortion. they just allowed this debate to continue with elected leaders instead of judges. the new republican majority in the house wasted little time passing pro-life legislation.
