Tuesday, December 22nd 2020, 8:07 pm - Intense snow made a mess of travel in southern Alberta Tuesday, with numerous collisions resulting from the slick road conditions.
A strong system that crossed British Columbia earlier this week and is on its way out of the eastern Prairies brought heavy snowfall over a good chunk of Western Canada. By Tuesday morning, Kananaskis Country, Alta. received 70 cm of snow, with 40+ cm accumulating in other high-elevation areas. Even Calgary found itself buried in 20-40 cm so far.
That had a major effect on travel across the country, with parts of the Trans-Canada Highway down to one lane in some areas. In Calgary, more than 50 collisions, some involving injuries, were reported on the roads between Monday night and early Tuesday morning.
