Judges can pass this type of sentence if they find a defendant to be a dangerous offender - meaning they present a significant risk of serious harm to members of the public.
The defendant must usually serve two-thirds of the custodial term before they can be considered for release by the Parole Board and they will then serve the extended licence period.
