Democrat Jonathan Ahmadi Announces Campaign For State Assembly District 38
Local community leader, engineer and staff member for former congresswoman Katie Hill, Jonathan Ahmadi, has announced his candidacy for State Assembly District 38, which includes Santa Clarita.
“The communities of the Santa Clarita and Simi Valleys are at a crossroads,” Ahandi said in a statement Thursday. “The challenges posed by the homelessness crisis and the skyrocketing cost of housing are daunting, and we must face them while trying to recover from the pandemic that brought so much suffering and economic pain to so many working families.”
Currently represented by Republican Suzette Martinez Valladares from Santa Clarita, State Assembly District 38 encompasses Santa Clarita and the surrounding valleys. The seat is up for election in 2022.
The Santa Clarita City Council is scheduled Tuesday to hold a special meeting to discuss a lawsuit that may put Santa Clarita voters in a position to elect their council members through district-based elections instead of the existing “at-large” method.
The lawsuit, filed by Bay Area attorney Scott Rafferty in February 2020, asked the city to comply with the California Voting Rights Act and alleges that “at-large” elections dilute the votes of Latino residents.
“I have great confidence that this community, which is a great community, has functioned very well with a very unique and wonderful citizenry,” said Mayor Pro Tem Laurene Weste. “We will figure out the best way to serve the type of community that Santa Clarita is.”
