Hundreds of Ice Age pingo ponds are to be brought back to life as part of an £8m Wildlife Trust scheme.
Norfolk conservationists plan to re-dig lost chalk ponds which provide habitats for threatened creatures including the pond mud snail and the northern pool frog, England’s rarest amphibian.
The charity has identified 400 covered-over ponds on its Thompson Common site near Thetford in Norfolk, and believe there are another 70 to be found on the land next to it, which they are raising funds to buy.

An Army camp housing asylum seekers in Pembrokeshire is set to close within days, a UK government minister says.
It comes after inspectors said the camp at Penally and Napier Barracks in Kent were run-down and unsuitable .
The Home Office said it gave safe and secure accommodation for asylum seekers who would otherwise be destitute .
Welsh Secretary Simon Hart said the Home Office had agreed to return Penally to the Ministry of Defence by 21 March.
THERE was little understanding or regard from the Home Office of the impact that housing asylum seekers in Penally Camp would have at a local level. This is amongst the findings of the independent report into the facility, which has been described as damning . Despite Home Secretary Priti Patel maintaining that there had been consultation with everybody , the report states that the Home Office did not consult in advance with local stakeholders - such as those who needed to set up healthcare for residents. The inspectors who spent two days at both Penally Camp and Napier Barracks during the week of February 15 were from the Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration (ICIBI) and Her Majesty s Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP).
