Washington officials hope project fuels more Business 24 development

WASHINGTON  Ground was broken several weeks ago on a groundbreaking business along U.S. Business Route 24, one of the city s main streets. A Beck s fuel center and convenience store is being built on a 4.56-acre property. It could open as early as May. The project is on the site of a former restaurant building that was originally a Taco Bell and most recently True Taste of Italy, and a former Shell gas station that became a used car lot after it closed. After resisting for years allowing video gaming in businesses other than bars and restaurants that have a liquor license for on-site consumption, the Washington City Council last year added truck stops to the list of places that could offer video gaming.

Washington s new winery Tres Rojas opens for business

WASHINGTON  It s a short drive to Tres Rojas Winery on a gravel and asphalt millings road off East Cruger Road. The unpaved path is nothing like the proverbial long and winding road that Bob and Lisa Barry traveled before finally finding a spot for their winery. After having winery proposals rejected by East Peoria and Peoria zoning boards, mainly because of complaints from prospective neighbors, the Barrys purchased 50.6 acres of the Tarvin farm owned by Washington in June 2019. The couple then waited patiently for a few months for rezoning, annexation and a special-use permit to be approved by the City Council before work on the winery could begin.
