Cultured meat price dropping | News, Sports, Jobs - Adirondack Daily Enterprise

To the editor: I was thrilled to learn an Israeli company, Future Meat Technologies, has slashed production costs for cultured meat and hopes to bring it to the United States in the next year-and-a-half. For those who don’t know, cultured meat is grown from cells, without slaughter. It’s better for the environment, public health and animal welfare. Future Meat Technologies can make a quarter-pound of cultivated chicken for a little less than $4. This is down from $7.50 just a few months ago. “We will launch a product in the U.S. market in the next 18 months that will have a commercially viable price,” company CEO Rom Kshuk told the Financial Times, suggesting this will be under $2.

Cultured meat for the climate | News, Sports, Jobs - Adirondack Daily Enterprise

To the editor: In order to help meet our obligations under the Paris Climate Agreement, the United States should invest public funds into cultured-meat research. For those who don’t know, cultured meat is grown from cells, without slaughter. This revolutionary protein will have a dramatically smaller environmental impact than conventional meat. “Industrial livestock agriculture raising cows, pigs and chickens generates as much greenhouse gas emissions as all cars, trucks and automobiles combined,” Greenpeace states. “Cattle ranchers have clear cut millions of acres of forests for grazing pastures, inhibiting the landscape’s ability to absorb carbon from the atmosphere.” Furthermore, as the environmental group notes, factory farms create huge cesspools of manure that emit methane and nitrous oxide, in addition to carbon dioxide. Over the course of a century, a pound of methane actually has 25 times as much of a negative impact on the climate as a pound of carbon

Letter to the Editor: Cultured meat is a humane, safer alternative

Letter to the Editor: ‘Cultured’ meat is a humane, safer alternative Share Democrats should include federal funding for cultured-meat research in their coronavirus-relief bill. For readers who aren’t aware, cultured meat is grown from cells, without slaughter. Since animals are removed from the process, the risk of zoonotic diseases like COVID-19 making the jump to humans is eliminated. Our current food system which relies on huge numbers of creatures being packed together in dirty cages is like kindling to the fire of a future pandemic. There is no reason to accept this danger. Though cultured meat is now more expensive than its slaughtered counterpart, this can be fixed with open-access research.
