Man could face new trial in fatal beating of 2-year-old after N.J. Supreme Court won’t hear appeal

The state Supreme Court will not hear an appeal to a lower court ruling tossing out a man’s conviction in the fatal beating of a 2-year-old girl.
Last year, an appellate court panel reversed the conviction of Leslie D. Hill, 30, of Salem, who pleaded guilty in 2017 to aggravated manslaughter and was sentenced to 25 years in the death of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old daughter, A’Keena Cooke.
Hill remains jailed and faces a new trial.
A’Keena’s autopsy found damage to her head, spine and internal organs and determined she died from multiple blunt-force injuries.
2 men found shot to death in South Jersey city

Two men were shot to death in Salem City early Friday, authorities said.
Police responded to the 200 block of Wesley Street around 1:30 a.m., where they found a man dead in a vehicle, according to Salem County Prosecutor John T. Lenahan.
While canvassing the area, officers found the second man dead in an alley between Wesley and Sinnickson streets, not far from the first victim, Lenahan said.
More than six shots were fired, according to Salem City Police Chief John Pelura III.
Investigators have no motive for the killings and no arrests have been made.
One hospitalized following Salem City shooting

A man is hospitalized following a Tuesday night shooting in Salem City.
The incident happened outdoors on the 300 block of East Broadway, near Olive Street, just before 7 p.m., according to police.
The victim, described as a 38-year-old Salem man, was shot twice and walked into a nearby business for help, Salem Police Chief John Pelura III reported.
He was taken to Christiana Hospital in Delaware with non-life threatening injuries and was listed in stable condition.
The victim would not say who shot him, Pelura noted.
No arrests have been made, but the investigation is ongoing.
