A large retaining wall that went up along Highway 299 in Shasta State Historic Park five years ago is getting a safety fix.
On Monday, crews with Mitchell Johnson Construction of Redding started chipping away at the decorative stones on the wall after it was discovered last summer that they were falling off and creating a safety hazard, California Department of Transportation spokesman Chris Woodward said.
The 224-foot wall, which ranges from 10 to 24 feet high, was part of a $1.9 million state ADA improvement project in 2016 that also added a sidewalk. The cost to take the rocks off and put a stain veneer in their place is $310,000, Woodward said.
ROCKFORD SwedishAmerican celebrated the impending opening of its new Women and Children s Hospital Thursday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The four-story, 120,000-square-foot building, located at 1350 Charles Street, is scheduled to open on March 23 to patients and will provide new technology, larger delivery rooms, and state-of-the-art operating rooms.
UW Health pediatric specialty physicians will work in a clinic on the first floor. Labor and delivery will be on the second floor. The neonatal intensive care unit will be on the third floor. The fourth floor will be for mothers and newborn babies.
For SwedishAmerican President and CEO Tom O Connor, the $55 million facility is a testament to the hospital s dedication to improving patient and family experiences.

The atmosphere of the building was a crucial part of the construction for Jen Callison, director of women and children’s services for the hospital. Callison wants patients to feel welcomed and comfortable in the new building. She said materials and colors were carefully chosen to help achieve that experience. Our goal would be to have them walk into an environment that they feel immediately welcomed, Callison said. Also, there can be positivity to feel uplifted and have the color brighten their day.
The new technology integrated into the building is intended to make it more efficient for staff and patients alike. A two-person scrub sink is featured in the entrance of the building, along with more scrub stations throughout for visitors to keep their hands clean. In addition, the hospital is introducing an ultraviolet light station where individuals can have their keys and phone isanitized quickly.

The city’s annual building permit summary showed the most activity in a decade in 2020.
The summer compiles data on the number of building permits issued and the valuation of those projects for the year. It includes alterations to existing dwellings, improvements, entirely new buildings and demolitions.
“We’ve had a lot of activity this past year, which is great.” said Michelle Spohnheimer, director of housing and community development. “A lot of it is in relation to recovery yet from the tornado.”
