Beyer s Byways: Vidal should have more to say, but it does have Wyatt Earp
By John R. Beyer

As I have written in past columns, there are places to which we are destined to travel without ever intending to go there.
One of my more memorable quotes, if I say so myself.
When we travel, there are times we are moving toward our destination when, on the way, another place shows up in front of us that is so intriguing, we must take a brief detour.
These places are often where true adventure awaits.
As a travel writer, I find myself in that realm quite often, and I find it reassuring. Just because I want to end up at one place, doesn’t mean I don’t want to find myself in a totally different place for a spell. That is what makes life exciting.

President Theodore Roosevelt first visited northern Arizona in 1903. What he saw impressed the world traveler who had seen some pretty interesting things in his life.
He was looking at the Grand Canyon and marveled at this long, curving geologic wonder. The canyon winds its way 277 miles through the high desert of Arizona, reaching a width of 18 miles in some spots, and a depth of nearly a mile in others truly an awesome sight to behold.
“Humph, that is one grand canyon,” the President observed.
A guide nodded, “Mr. President, it is known as the Grand Canyon, after all.”
Beyer s Byways: Searching for Searchlight

I often get emails from readers asking about this or that, sometimes with details on something I may have missed on my travels: A road I incorrectly labeled, a name I misspelled. It’s good that these emails come in. I love reading them and communicating with their senders and learning from my mistakes.
It’s also good because it means readers are enjoying my columns, which makes my day.
One such gentleman wrote me after the Christmas Tree Pass story came out, and suggested I check out Searchlight, Nevada.
Beyer s Byways: Seligman fights on in a pandemic

According to Eric, an employee at the Rusty Bolt (his mother, Linda, owns the shop), COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on the small but usually vibrant town of Seligman, Arizona.
“Most of our tourists are from out of this country,” Eric said. “I’d say 70 to 75%, actually.”
For this iconic stop along Route 66 between Kingman and Flagstaff, that is a lot of shoppers to lose from a pandemic a loss that could be fatal for any business.
The small store sells Route 66 memorabilia, leather goods and beautiful handmade jewelry.
