Time Lapse: Vets Auditorium in the spotlight

Time Lapse: Vets Auditorium in the spotlight Michael Delaney, The Providence Journal © The Providence Journal, file Mural artists Robert Haun, left, and George DeFelice work on the city and town emblems around the dome of Vets Auditorium in the late 1940s. The emblems were painted in DeFelice s studio and then attached to the dome. Last Sunday’s Journal had a story about preparations being made at locations where the Rhode Island General Assembly will meet this year, rather than in the State House. One of those places is Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence. In the late 1940s, the auditorium was being prepared, but for its grand opening. The decorations included ceiling paintings of the emblems from all the cities and towns in Rhode Island. The venue underwent major renovations decades later, as did its neighbor, the former Masonic Temple, which is now the Renaissance Providence Downtown Hotel.

Raimondo is Biden s pick for commerce secretary, NY Times reports

The Biden transition team announced the president-elect s choice of Raimondo for this key economic position Thursday night. The agency has a critical role in everything from technology policy to climate change to promoting American industry to the census. Should Raimondo win U.S. Senate confirmation sometime after the new president s Jan. 20 inauguration  her resignation would promote Lt. Gov. Dan McKee to governor for the two remaining years of her second term in the state s highest office. The last time a Rhode Island governor quit was in December 1950, when John O. Pastore resigned to become a member of the U.S. Senate, and the lieutenant governor took over for the final few weeks until newly elected Dennis Roberts took office.
