Dunbar girl s poignant poem in memory of great uncle captures Poppyscotland s attention

A FASCINATION with her great uncle led to a schoolgirl penning a poignant poem marking Remembrance Day. Youngsters at Dunbar Primary School were studying the Second World War in the lead-up to this year’s Remembrance Sunday. Eleven-year-old Kirsten Gough penned a poem, titled I’ve Been The Poppy while thinking about her great uncle Cecil Thomas Dundas. The 23-year-old died when the SS Jumna – on which he was 3rd officer – was shelled by the German heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper on Christmas Day 1940. The poem not only caught the eye of classmates but also Poppyscotland and was posted on social media, attracting hundreds of likes.
