Caribbean books at the top

THIS YEAR’S NGC Bocas Lit Fest promised an event that I waited for with bated breath: the list of the top 100 Caribbean books that shaped us. The list lived up to all those feelings that such book lists evoke: nostalgia, joy, confusion, sadness, disappointment and even anger over books that didn’t make the list.
What is missing from the list tells a story just as important as books that did make the list. Non-fiction books barely made the list. Post-colonial literature proved scarce.
Many books on this list shaped my perceptions of the Caribbean reader and an immigrant. Given the nature of the question, I would have had to answer Miguel Street by VS Naipaul is the Caribbean book that shaped me the most because it moved me to get on a plane, come to Trinidad and make this island my home.
High notes to end Bocas Lit Fest evenings

Despite continued restrictions on gatherings, the 2021 NGC Bocas Lit Fest will stay true to its usual social and cultural evening fare in its 2021 all-virtual festival.
The three festival days – April 23-25 – all close with engaging celebrations of music, Caribbean literature, and prize-winners’ announcements.
After a decade of annual literary celebration, festival-goers have become accustomed to nightly wrap-up sessions fitting of the largest literary festival in the Caribbean, and this year will be no exception, albeit in virtual form, said a media release from the NGC Bocas Lit Fest.

Fake Names, the band made up of Brian Baker (Minor Threat, Bad Religion), Michael Hampton (S.O.A., Embrace), Dennis Lyxzén (Refused), and Johnny Temple (Girls Against Boys, Soulside), have stated that they are working on new material. On social media the band posted, “Working at quite a distance @dennislyxzen tracking vocals for our next foot forward #ep #epitaphrecords #fakenames” along with a picture of Dennis Lyxzen in the studio.
