We were saddened to learn that Johnny Hannigan passed away on Friday 11 December, at the age of 87. John was a winger who came to Sunderland from Morton in 1955.
Earlier this season Sunderland scored eight goals against Aston Villa Under 21s. It was the first time the Lads had scored eight since Hannigan weighed in with a hat-trick against Charlton in an 8-1 win at Roker Park in September 1956. Strangely, on another occasion Johnny scored a hat-trick it came in a North Eastern League game at Annfield Plain for the reserves in a 7-2 win where Danny Brannigan scored four and the scoring went: Brannigan, Hannigan, Brannigan, Hannigan, Brannigan, Hannigan, Brannigan!
