one of those people was the first to die. ron, thank you very much. we appreciate you joining us this evening on cnn. thank you, don. i m don lemon at the cnn world headquarters in atlanta. a second person is being sought right now in today s mass shooting at an arizona supermarket. six people were killed including a federal judge. democratic congresswoman gabrielle giffords was among the dozens of people who were wounded. she was meeting with constituents about noon eastern time, 10:00 a.m. local time, when a gunman stepped up and began firing at very close range. despite a bullet passing through giffords brain, doctors believe that she will survive. six others, however, were not so lucky. among them, federal judge john m. roll, who was about to mark his 20th year on bench. sheriff clarence dupnik says roll had just attended mass nearby and stopped by to say hello to giffords. the sheriff said it appeared the gunman was targeting giffords and that the judge was simply in the wr
but we know that representative giffords was one of the victims. she is currently at a hospital in the area. and she is battling for her life. we also know that at least five people lost their lives in this tragedy. among them were a federal judge, john roll, who has served america s legal system for almost 40 years, and a young girl who was barely 9 years old. i ve spoken to arizona governor jan brewer and offered the full resources of the federal government. a suspect is currently in custody but we don t yet know what provoked this unspeakable act. a comprehensive investigation is currently under way. and at my direction, director bob muller is en route to arizona to help coordinate these efforts. i ve also spoken to the democratic and republican leaders in the house.

store essentially outside the safeway store where this shooting took place. mark, what can you tell us? john, it s an immense scene here where this scene of devastation took place earlier, that shooting here in a packed parking lot, people were here not only to meet with gabrielle giffords and maybe give her some of their concern, but also to do their grocery shopping. it s a very busy shopping center at tucson. it was just full of people. i m looking at the parking lot. still packed with cars, all surrounded with yellow police tape. it s an indication of how many people were here when this thing happened. and also why we re seeing so many victims. again, six killed so far. 18 wounded. there are still bodies in the parking lot of the safeway. people who could not be saved after that gunman started shooting into this crowd and again, hitting so many people. many of them probably just here with their families on a saturday morning. john: mark, one of the more interesting reports that
is recuperating from an amazing gunshot wound, amazingly recuperating, i should say, from a gunshot wound that apparently went through her head, entered one side, out the other, through the brain, and doctors are optimistic they will be able to save her life. five others are in critical condition, according to that hospital report. a young child we know to be dead, a nine-year-old girl, also dead, john roll, the chief judge chief federal judge in that district. it s just an awful day for the folks of arizona and really for the nation. the mayor of tucson, arizona where the shooting took place says he has spoken to the congresswoman s father. here is what the mayor has to say. i did have a chance to talk about gabby s father as he came in and i told him that this community and this state has gabby s prayers and thoughts in our hearts for her recovery.
