Green Township demolishes last one-room schoolhouse
The structure’s useful life ended earlier this week.
The township demolished the former one-room schoolhouse because the building was crumbling, according to Scott Imhoff, president of the Green Township Board of Trustees. The soft bricks were deteriorating, and the roof was beyond repair.
“It was not salvageable,” Imhoff said.
Items recovered
While the building couldn’t be saved, Smithville Community Historical Society President Ralph Smucker managed to salvage a number of items from the schoolhouse where both of his parents attended as children. The school got its name “Center” because it was located in the center of the township.
