Mets fighting wild injuries, struggling stars and general Metsiness

May 25, 2021 Welcome to The Opener, where every weekday morning you’ll get a fresh, topical column to start your day from one of SI.com ’s MLB writers. Back in November, when Steve Cohen was approved to take over as majority owner of the Mets, I wrote a column pondering what this new ownership might mean for the team’s Metsiness the ineffable quality that makes them, well, the Mets. This quality is not tied to winning or losing. It is not directly tied to the roster or the manager or even the owner. It transcends all of that; Metsiness is a journey instead of a destination. Indeed, the column noted, it felt entirely possible the team would spend the winter marking its new era with a major acquisition like, say, Francisco Lindor? and go on to enjoy a successful season all while still keeping a certain Metsiness. This seemed perfectly reasonable: Metsiness was “not tied to a specific sort of action,” the column went. “It was a vibe. It was a spirit. It was getting loc

Mets Conforto, McNeil out until late June with hamstring injuries

Originally posted on MLB Trade Rumors  |  By Connor Byrne  |  Last updated 5/24/21 The Mets placed outfielder Michael Conforto and second baseman Jeff McNeil on the injured list on May 17, but both players are going to miss much more time than the 10-day minimum. Mets acting general manager Zack Scott said Monday that Conforto and McNeil have “significant hamstring strains” that will shelve them until late June, per Laura Albanese of Newsday. Conforto has largely been an offensive standout with the Mets since he debuted in 2015, but this news continues a difficult season for the 28-year-old. He’s off to a so-so start (by his standards) with a .230/.356/.336 line and a pair of home runs in 135 plate appearances. It’ll now be several more weeks before Conforto can try to rebound in advance of a potential trip to free agency.

Final Score: Rockies 3, Mets 2-At least James McCann can play first

Final Score: Rockies 3, Mets 2-At least James McCann can play first Share this story Photo by Elsa/Getty Images The struggling Rockies made Citi Field look a bit like Coors in their 3-2 win over the Mets. They tagged David Peterson for two home runs in the second and were generally tattooing the ball all night. Their third run scored when Johneshwy Fargas ran into the wall attempting to make a catch that went for a RBI triple. Unfortunately for Fargas he was later removed from the game with a shoulder injury. After getting shutdown for eight innings against Colorado starter Austin Gomer, the Mets trailed 3-1 heading into the ninth. Brandon Drury led off with a home run to pull the Mets within a run but a rally came up just short.
