Hampton City School Board votes to rename 5 schools after local trailblazers

In the spring of 2020, the school board started discussing the need to investigate the origins behind each of the division's school names and the potential need to rename schools.

A day after neighboring Newport News approved new names for four of its schools, the Hampton School Board changed the names of five of its own schools. Like Newport News and several other cities in Virginia, Hampton took a look at the origins of its school names and sought to change those that had connections to slavery, the Civil War, and the Jim Crow era. At its school board meeting Wednesday night, the Hampton School Board unanimously approved the following changes:

(WWBT) - It’s Teacher Appreciation Week, and to celebrate, several school systems in the area announced their “Teacher of the Year.” In Richmond, Superintendent Jason Kamras, Mayor Levar Stoney, and school board representatives surprised Ashley Bland, from John B Cary Elementary School, with this year’s 2021 Teacher of the Year title! “I was expecting to come here to do one thing, which was to take pictures, but this whole event is to celebrate Teacher of the Year, so I’m feeling a little overwhelmed but definitely overjoyed,” said the Instructional Technology Resource Teacher.

The schools include John B. Cary Elementary, John Tyler Elementary, Spratley Gifted Center, Tucker-Capps Elementary Fundamental and Booker Elementary.

W&M campus structures named for trailblazing alumni

Photo - of - by staff |  April 23, 2021 Following a consultative and thorough process established earlier this year, William & Mary’s Board of Visitors voted Friday to rename two campus buildings and name one campus structure to honor trailblazing alumni who helped open the door for marginalized people at both the university and beyond. Morton Hall will become John E. Boswell Hall, named for an alumnus, recognized scholar and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. The Arcade at Cary Field, the arched walkway at Zable Stadium that serves as its northern colonnade, will be named the Arthur W. Matsu Arcade after the university’s first known Asian-American student and William & Mary’s first “true gridiron hero.” Taliaferro Hall will become Hulon L. Willis Sr. Hall, named after the first African-American student to enroll at William & Mary.
