If you are into british spy stuff, even spy novels and bbc cereals and that kind of stuff, you will know there is a convenient mnemonic device for us americans about british spy stuff, a convenient device to help us remember what the different british spy agencies are. They have one Domestic Intelligence agency thats mi 5. Thats the rough equivalent of fbi. They have mi 6 which is the equivalent of our cia. And theres this handy mnemonic device which is mi5 is the fbi. And mi6 is the cia. Its very handy. That said, it all falls apart when you get to the third agency which is called gchq, because that does not sound like anything. Theres no neat, easy to remember device to remind us all that the british Intelligence Agency called gchq is the equivalent of our nsa. Our National Security adviser. Theres no easy way to remember.
