Unknown victims of secret massacre must be honoured

Unknown victims of secret massacre must be honoured By Zoubair Ayoob Share We all have things in our pasts we would rather not be reminded of, that we hope the rest of the world could forget, or never become aware of. In the case of the apartheid government, despite the many revelations at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of atrocities committed by the old security police and army, there are several other skeletons still in the cupboard that people would rather have stay there than come tumbling out. Of course the apartheid apparatus is not alone in wanting to keep secrets; there are also many accounts of suspected spies being tortured by the ANC at its bases in other African countries, including Quatro in Angola.

Chillies from outer space and ancient eggs

Please support them  .  In Derrick Avenue or the Cyrildene Chinatown, there are not many people who are not Chinese. Both sides of the street are alive with Chinese supermarkets, fresh produce spilling onto the street where it becomes waste the further it ventures, massage places, restaurants, trucks bleeping to park, Mercs and busy Chinese men. Chinese women run across the street in pretty pumps. Hardly any hubbubs or conversations feature English. Here I enjoy that. But it is a scary prospect when travelling to another country. About a decade ago I was offered a trip to China, to write about my choice of travel and food topics. That was pretty exciting and I thought up topics in no time but I put off contacting the tourism people and I kept putting it off. I felt dread under the thrill. When I identified the d

Ahmed Timol murder case postponed again

Ahmed Timol murder case postponed again By Mayibongwe Maqhina Share Cape Town - Three years after former apartheid security branch officer Joao Rodrigues first appeared in court for the murder of anti-apartheid activist Ahmed Timol, his criminal trial has yet to commence. On Thursday, the case was again postponed pending the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) ruling in Rodrigues’s application for leave to appeal the dismissal of the permanent stay of prosecution application by the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg in 2019. The SCA has yet deliver its verdict after Rodrigues’s application was heard on November 6, 2019. Rodrigues was charged for the murder of Timol after the second inquest found that he did not die from suicide.

Carl Niehaus forced to retract part of affidavit at Nei

Carl Niehaus was left with egg on his face when he was forced on Monday to retract parts of his affidavit to the reopened inquest into trade unionist Dr Neil Aggett’s death in detention at Johannesburg’s John Vorster Square police station on 5 February 1982.  Niehaus, an ANC MK veteran, was also a detainee in the 1980s. He took the stand because his 2020 affidavit to the court was not accepted by counsel for Security Branch policeman Nicolaas Deetlefs, who was a warrant officer at the time. The dispute was over Deetlefs’ denials of ever assaulting Niehaus.   Niehaus, a witness for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), also said in his affidavit that he wanted to testify at the reopened inquest to dispute evidence given by a Security Branch policeman, Joseph Nyampule, in 2020. It was “in order that he [Nyampule] not be allowed to peddle lies”, Niehaus said.
