nice to meet you. if we can just have you take a seat. this is the application form. okay. john has come to tca to sign up for the supplemental nutrition assistance program, also known as snap, or food stamps. today, 1 in 7 americans rely on food stamps to keep from going hungry and in louisiana a whopping 1 in 5 depend on the program. have you signed up for assistance before? i have not. so what brought you in for assistance today? what was the deciding factor? i mean, things are just getting tough, man. you know, i haven t been working in a while, and i stay at home, i take care of our son. and it s been this way now for a little over a year. it doesn t work, man. you know what i mean? why do you think it s been so hard for you to find work? my job as a bricklayer in the union just evaporated. i mean, it was just gone. there was no more. you know, i had a job making $25 an hour and a nice, you know,
you know? like the scourge of drugs and violence, man. it is just absolutely pervasive. so do you see that in your neighborhood here? i see it up and down the block every night. and you know, i can t afford to live anywhere else, man. you know what i mean? i mean, i feel like he personally feels kind of broken. and he s, like millions of people in this country, he ll go through it on a daily basis. what do you say we go this way, huh? yeah. but just because opportunity has drifted so far out of john s reach, does it have to be the same story for his son shawn? after all, without the promise that things will improve for the next generation, where does that leave us? there has to be a breaking point that isn t just poor people. you know, the question is what can we do? i don t know if it s through taxes or charity. i think we d all love to get paid more. more jobs need to be created here. more affordable housing. affordable health care. access to good education.
