Singing jeweller s Captain Tom 100 challenge raises funds for Springhill Hospice Date published: 07 May 2021 John Swinden performing his Captain Tom 100 challenge Rochdale’s singing jeweller John Swinden has raised just short of £2,000 for Springhill Hospice with his Captain Tom 100 songs challenge. John sang 102 songs in a row on Sunday 2 May, which took him five hours and 40 minutes, performing hit tracks by the likes of Elvis, Dean Martin, Johnny Cash, Bobby Vee and the Everly Brothers. The Captain Tom 100 challenge was set up by the late veteran’s family in his honour: dream up a Captain Tom 100 challenge based around the number 100 and do it at any time and anywhere over Captain Tom’s birthday weekend – starting on Friday 30 April through to Bank Holiday Monday 3 May.

Following the outpouring of heartfelt messages since the death of Captain Sir Tom Moore on 2 February, his family pledged to celebrate his life with an event that everyone, in the UK and around the world, could be involved in. Captain Tom 100 offers Springhill supporters, of all ages and abilities, the opportunity to raise crucial funds for the Hospice, while at the same time celebrating Captain Tom’s generosity of spirit, the hope and joy he brought to millions, and his sense of fun.

A grand effort from local jeweller for Springhill Hospice Date published: 13 January 2021 John Swinden presenting £1,000 donation to Barbara Lloyd, Community Fundraiser for Springhill Hospice After being inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore’s efforts to raise funds for NHS Charities by walking 100 laps of his garden for his 100th birthday, John purchased a piece of original artwork of Captain Sir Tom seated with the official RAF flypast for his 100th birthday overhead. The artwork, by local artist Lisa Haselden, now takes pride of place in John’s home, but he wanted to find a way to share the joy the painting brings him and also the enthusiasm created by Tom to raise funds for charities.
