Lingering over drinks by the firepit. Cooling off in a pool. Dinner in a screened porch (no bugs allowed). Lately, we’ve all been seeking out spaces where we can safely gather to socialize. For many, the backyard is the place to be, and the key is making this often underutilized area more versatile.
“People are looking at their landscape with a new lens,” says Bruce Allentuck, the owner of Allentuck Landscaping Co. in Rockville. “They’re looking at this asset they have and appreciating it more, and want to make it more compelling and more a part of their life and their style.”
That’s headline-catching news, but is it really a big deal for California’s oil industry?
The bigger news is that Governor Newsom has also asked the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to evaluate pathways to phase out all oil extraction across the state by no later than 2045.
“As we move to swiftly decarbonize our transportation sector and create a healthier future for our children, I’ve made it clear I don’t see a role for fracking in that future and, similarly, believe that California needs to move beyond oil,” Governor Newsom said.
The latest action comes less than two weeks after a bill that would have banned hydraulic fracturing in California along with most other ways of extracting crude oil failed to pass the state Senate’s Natural Resources and Water Committee by one vote.

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday took action to ban new permits for hydraulic fracturing starting in 2024, halting the controversial oil extraction method reviled by environmental activists, and called on the state regulators to evaluate phasing out all oil production in the state by 2045.
Newsom’s announcement comes as a recall campaign against him appears close to qualifying for the ballot and is a reversal from the governor’s previous statements that he lacked the executive authority to ban hydraulic fracturing, commonly known as fracking. Newsom recently decided to use the state’s environmental regulatory authority after efforts to pass the ban legislatively failed, an administration spokesperson said.

Central Michigan picks up pair of dominant wins Central Michigan University Sports Information 2/7/2021 BUFFALO, N.Y. The Central Michigan wrestling team won 18 of 20 matches on Sunday in posting a pair of dominating Mid-American Conference dual victories at Buffalo s Alumni Arena.
The Chippewas downed Edinboro, 30-6, and then topped the host Bulls, 40-0, posting their first shutout over a Division I program since a 33-0 win over Michigan State on Dec. 6, 2015.
The victories closed a weekend road trip that started with a 21-15 MAC win at Cleveland State on Friday. The Chippewas and Vikings split the 10 matches in that dual, as CMU was clearly feeling the physical effects of a long COVID-related layoff.
