Does Erdogan truly want to mend ties with US? By John Solomou | Updated: Feb 08, 2021 17:36 IST
Nicosia [Cyprus], February 8 (ANI): While Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is supposed to be trying to mend ties with the United States, his Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu last week told Hurriyet newspaper that it is blatantly clear that the US is behind the (failed coup of) July 15. It was the Fetullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO) which carried it out upon their orders. Europe was enthusiastic about it.
The US State Department flatly denied the accusation, saying it was wholly false and promptly condemned it, adding, These remarks and other unfounded and irresponsible claims of US responsibility for events in Turkey are inconsistent with Turkey s status as a NATO Ally and strategic partner of the United States.
Nicosia [Cyprus] February 1 (ANI): Facing sanctions from both the EU (European Union) and the US for a series of actions that caused anger and irritation to Ankara's western allies, President Tayyip Erdogan is gradually changing the orientation of Turkey and is moving away from the West and towards Russia and China.

Nicosia [Cyprus], January 25 (ANI): Last Thursday morning the center of the Iraqi capital Baghdad was shaken by a twin suicide bombing which killed at least 32 people and wounded more than 100, almost all Shia Muslims, in a second-hand clothes market in Tayaran Square.
The first suicide bomber, pretending to feel sick, cried out for help and when people went near him he detonated his explosive belt. As people rushed to help the victims, a second bomber blew himself up killing more people. The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) assumed responsibility for the bombing, which it said had targeted apostate Shiites .

Nicosia [Cyprus], December 21 (ANI): The President of Egypt Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the ruler of the most populous Arab country, in his seven-year iron rule has been violating almost all human rights of the relevant Universal Declaration, but so far has been treated scandalously gently by the United States and the European Union.
According to the U.S. State Department s report on human rights conditions in Egypt in 2019 there were unlawful or arbitrary killings, including extrajudicial killings by the government or its agents; forced disappearance; torture; arbitrary detention; harsh and life-threatening prison conditions, political prisoners and arbitrary or unlawful interference with privacy.
Will US and EU sanctions make Erdogan toe the line or make him more defiant? ANI | Updated: Dec 14, 2020 17:11 IST

Nicosia [Cyprus], December 14 (ANI): The past week must have been one of the worst for Turkey s arrogant President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as both the US and the EU, showing their frustration with his numerous unsavoury actions, decided to impose sanctions on Turkey.
This week the US Congress is expected to approve sanctions against Turkey for the purchase from Russia of the S-400 system worth USD 2.5 billion and this time President Donald Trump is not expected to oppose the sanctions, as he has been doing since 2017, when the Countering America s Adversaries Through Sanctions (Caatsa) act was passed, with an overwhelming majority in both houses of the Congress.
