John Shallerhorn, 35, was identified by police as the suspect who fatally shot the Louisiana police officer.
Shots were fired near the gymnasium at the school, according to police superintendent

The man accused of fatally shooting a police officer outside of a high school basketball game Friday night did so after becoming embroiled in an argument with a school staffer enforcing a mask mandate and compliance with other coronavirus restrictions.
Police say John Shallerhorn also robbed a man of his medallion and chain at gunpoint in the George Washington Carver High School parking lot before the altercation that ended with the slaying of Martinus Mitchum.

Tributes have been paid to the New Orleans police officer shot dead while intervening in an alleged dispute over masks during a high school basketball game.
Tulane University Police Officer Martinus Mitchum was shot and killed on Friday while working at George Washington Carver High School in the 3000 block of Higgins Boulevard.
Mitchum, a Tulane University police officer who was also a reserve deputy 2nd City Court constable, was working security detail at a George Washington Carver High School basketball game when the shooting occurred.
