Scott Pelley: How did you meet?
Lauren Thomas: We actually met in high school. He was always looking for me, and I was always running the other way. Later on, we reconnected on Facebook. And I realized, like, ok, you know.
Tim, a 32-year-old security guard and Lauren, a Chicago health insurance administrator, set their date, December 2021.
Lauren Thomas: I called him Teddy, because he was just like a big Teddy bear. He called me Kitty. He was a big guy, 6 7 , like, 417 pounds. On the surface it s, like, wow, oh, that s a big scary guy. But then when you go to know him, like, Oh, you re just so cuddly.
A birthday celebration. A special game of cards. A basketball game. A bucket filled with seashells. These are the memories held by the children of COVID-19 victims.
Across the country, some children are experiencing the death of a parent who was the center of their lives. Many of them are kids, teenagers and young adults, who were still finding their way in the world. Now, they re forced to adapt to a world without them.
While the full scope of parental death due to coronavirus is not yet understood, data is starting to emerge. A recent study by the Journal of the American Medical Association estimates 37,300 to 43,000 children under the age of 18 have lost a parent to COVID-19.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Monday marks the one-year anniversary of the death of Terre Haute firefighter John Schoffstall.
He died at the age of 41 after contracting COVID-19.
Schoffstall worked at Terre Haute Fire Station Number 5.
Flags in the city were at half-staff on Monday to honor him. Dispatch also held a moment of silence at noon.

WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) Jennifer Schoffstall had no idea that Indiana legislators were taking steps to honor her late husband, John Schoffstall, with a resolution.
She said she discovered it while scrolling on Facebook. I was very humbled. I was shocked. I was surprised. I was honored,â She explained. âI immediately friended Senator Ford on Facebook and sent him a message to let him know how appreciative my family and I were of what he s doing to keep Johnâs memory alive.
Schoffstall said she s proud of the impact John had on the community and it means a lot to her family for him to be remembered in this way.

In New York, 4,200 children experienced a parental or caregiver death due to COVID-19 between March and July of 2020, according to a study from United Hospital Fund and Boston Consulting Group.
