Applause erupted at the City of Ames low head dam celebration Saturday morning as a kayaker paddled by using the now-safe passage downstream.
About 80 people congregated at the North River Valley Dam at 10 a.m. where community leaders cut a ribbon signaling the completion of the low head dam modification which will allow safe passage for paddlers and fish alike. Saturday was one of the first community events of the year as the weather warms up.
Iowa River Revival took advantage of the event to officially award Ames River Town of the year. Ames is the 15th town to receive the award.
