Gianforteâs office announced Monday that all state agency heads will receive higher pay, ranging from 5% to 46%. The governor cited low pay compared to other states as the reason for the increases.
âMontanaâs pay for agency directors has been among the worst in our region and country,â Gianforte said in a statement. âWeâre looking for folks who can make our state agencies more responsive to the people they serve and more responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars.

HELENA â Most state agency directors appointed by Gov. Greg Gianforte are getting paid at substantially higher salaries than their predecessors under the Bullock administration â some as much as 46 percent more.
The highest-paid director will be Adam Meier, at the Department of Public Health and Human Services, which is the largest state agency. His salary will be $165,000 â a 46 percent increase over the previous directorâs salary of about $113,000.
The administration told MTN News Monday that pay for people leading state agencies has been among the worst in the country for years, and that it offered more money to create competitive salaries to attract and retain the change agents with the qualifications and experience weâre looking for.

The gubernatorial transition team for Governor-elect Greg Gianforte on Thursday released the roster of his staff members and their salaries.
Gianforte, Montanaâs current member of the U.S. House of Represenatives and a former high-tech entrepreneur from Bozeman, won election November 3, defeating Democratic Lt. Gov. Mike Cooney. His victory made Montana the only state in the nation that saw a change of party control in the governorâs office in November.
He will be sworn in at the Montana State Capitol on Monday, January 4 at 9 a.m. His running mate Kristen Juras will be sworn in as the lieutenant governor.
