Yester Years: Pubs that set the bar | Winsford Guardian

STARTING at Winsford and in Delamere Street, we find a house on the Whitby’s Lane junction; it has a very faded hotel sign on the gable end. This was The Red Lion, and it was opened in 1820, where Thomas Whitby was the licensee for 17 years. In 1871 Robert Whitby became both the owner and the licensee and remained there until 1882. It was sold to Greenall’s in 1890, and there followed 24 licensees through the years until 1914 when Jabez Jones was the last one before the building became three private houses. Heading back to Barnton, we pass through Whitegate Village and the large imposing white house opposite the village green and school.
