April 14, 2021 ⚾: Messick Named to Golden Spikes Watch List
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Freshman pitcher Parker Messick has been named to the Golden Spikes Award watch list, USA Baseball announced Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Spikes Award is given to the nation’s top player.
Messick, from Plant City, Florida, is 2-2 this season with a 2.60 earned run average and 69 strikeouts in 45.0 innings pitched. He leads the league and ranks fifth nationally, in strikeouts and ranks fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference in ERA. In seven starts against ACC competition, Messick’s ERA drops to 1.69 with opponents hitting just .183 against the left-hander.
Messick has been Florida State’s Friday night starter throughout the season and was the ACC Player of the Week for his performance against No. 16 Virginia when he struck out 11 and allowed just three hits in a career-high 8.0 innings. Messick also had 11 strikeouts against Wake For
