Cannabis dispensary announced it’s opening in this Shore town but officials haven’t approved it

A medical marijuana dispensary announced its plans to open at the Jersey Shore earlier this week, a move that would expand access to patients and set another city up to sell to the pending 21 and older market.
The problem: The city claims it did not know about the dispensary’s plans to set up shop.
Breakwater Treatment & Wellness, which operates a dispensary in Cranbury, announced this week it would open a second location in Asbury Park.
But Asbury Park’s mayor John Moor reportedly did not know about the new dispensary until he read a story in the Asbury Park Press, and called the announcement “irresponsible.”

Rent control will be up to voters in Jersey Shore town

After three hours of divided public comment, the Asbury Park City Council voted 4-1 late Tuesday night to reject a rent control ordinance proposed by a local tenants’ rights group and opposed by landlords.

“Many people in Asbury Park want this ordinance in place for protection. The cost of rental units in Asbury Park is rising at an alarming rate. This levels the playing field and puts fairness back into the equation,”
Derek Minno Bloom, another founding member of the APAHC, wrote.
“The draft ordinance has been signed by more than 700 Asbury Park residents, who all agreed that something needs to stop the rapidly rising rent prices. One woman told me she is being pushed out of Asbury Park by the end of December because her rent is going to increase by $600 from last year.”
