side, john mcgau, former director of the secret service under president bush, and david valdez, who was white house photographer. gentlemen, i m so honored to have both of you on. thank you so much, and my condolences to both of you. john, i m going to start with you. thank you. all right, sir. you oversaw the president s security. his protective call sign was timber wolf. you were by his side day in, day out. what was that like? well t w, it was a job, an important one. i knew that whatever we did could affect his well being and came started in 1980 in the campaign. i was with him then as the vice president and as the president, back two or three times. but for the most part of 13 years, i was there and just honored to have served the country in this manner. yeah. and while it s a tough day and a tough week that we lost him, it was clear to me in
limited intelligence on the ground. with that in mind it s going to be very difficult in fighting this guy even though authorities know who he is. well it may be. i think it will take a while, but where we don t have good intelligence i think we ll obtain good intelligence. it will be very important that we find him and bring him to justice and i believe as we have been successful in the past, even though it s in a foreign country, even though it s in a country that will protect him at least through the jihadists. somewhere, somehow, some way we will get the intelligence necessary to bring him to justice. i believe that. put a time frame on it. didn t put a time frame on bin laden. this man will be brought to justice. tom fuentes, john mcgau thanks to both of you. i appreciate it. thank you, carol. i ll be right back. ion that needs to be asked is what is it that we can do that is impactful?
but grew up in west london. he graduated with a degree in computer programming so let s talk more about this with cnn law enforcement analyst and former assistant director of the fbi, tom fuentes. i m also joined by john mcgau. he s the former director of the u.s. secret service. thank you for being with me this morning. good morning. tom, u.s. authorities and british authorities aren t confirming this man s identity. why? well normally because he s a british subject, you know the british are very conservative and in revealing the identity of any suspect or subject of their investigation. it s kind of common practice for them. i think they probably are not stunned that the information got out but in a way would probably prefer that it hadn t because they want to try to track him in the hopes that maybe he ll communicate with a former classmate or friend in brittain and they can intercept an e-mail or some other communication from him and this just alerts everybody that knows him
investigation, i can t speak to that, i can speak to the law enforcement side of it, but it is extensive and intensive from day one. and all of these possible thoughts were on the table from the very beginning and were never taken off the table. so the idea that this investigation has been somehow by the police, conducted in a sequential manner, that first they are looking at this and now they are looking at that, and then the next step is here, isn t completely true. that most of the investigation, as much as possible, was being done concurrently so all the various leads were in progress together. and as far as searching the pilot s home, they needed to have additional justification in their legal system to do it. so part of this is the mischaracterization on their part. and now we have a reason to go in. when we look at that, you had a reason early on. now we have the legal justification to take that stuff. and john, what is your view on this?
pilots. in fact, they have removed the simulator from the pilot s home. now they are trying to find out if the pilot was doing a rehearsal flight plan or if there s a real investigation into flying into different kind of elements and what would this all mean. back with us, the cnn aviation analyst mary schiavo and john mcgau, and tom fuentes. before the break, john mcgaw, there are three things kind of missing thus far, especially to help ease the grieving loved ones. you say there needs to be grief counselors and a command and control center. and the third item would be what that is missing thus far? well, the search of the land, fredericka. it s with as much sympathy as i can say, if they are in the water, they are gone. so concentrate on the land. and each area that has
