Sarasota Herald-Tribune US can’t leave Afghan women to Taliban Not long ago, I listened to a talk by a well-educated, young Afghan woman in American-accented English. Education of Afghan women, to me, was a symbol of the positive actions of the American and NATO military presence in that country. We have been made fully aware of the Taliban’s opposition and contempt for Western values and education. President Joe Biden has announced the departure of American troops from Afghanistan by Sept. 11. It is expected our NATO allies will follow Biden’s lead. Where does that leave Western-educated Afghan women? We must predict death or their return to broodmare status when the Taliban prevails, which it is reasonably certain to do.
