Mysterious False Dawn, Reported for Centuries, is Linked to Mars Dust

If you’ve ever rolled out of bed before dawn – or rolled home at that time – and were surprised to see the sky lit up in a strange way without any hint of the sun creeping up over the horizon, you were most likely witnessing an appropriately named phenomena known as a “false dawn.” If the light looks triangular, you’re not hallucinating (OK, you might be, but that’s your problem) – that’s the shape it takes. And if you’re afraid to tell anyone else because they might think you’re crazy, they probably already do – but you’re in good company … the ‘false dawn’ has been reported pre-Columbian Mesoamericans, astronomers as early as the 1600s and even the prophet Muhammed. Dust From Mars May Be The Source Of The Zodiacal Light

Space dust has been found to be concentrated in ways consistent with it coming from Mars. This could overturn theories on the origins of the phenomenon known as zodiacal light. Even though the evidence comes from a space probe, it s not any of the probes sent to the red planet. Instead, the phenomenon has been revealed through an unexpected application of the Juno spacecraft s solar panels. Under the right conditions, just after sunset or shortly before dawn, it is possible to see a faint, almost triangular glow in the sky known as the zodiacal light. The light is a product of space dust reflecting the Sun s rays. We see it only in parts of the sky because the dust is concentrated in bands close to the plane in which the planets orbit the Sun.

Zodiacal light seen before dawn could be reflection of Mars dust pushed into space

A mysterious luminous glow visible just before dawn, known as the zodiacal light, could be the result of tiny particles of dust being shed from Mars, NASA claims. The zodiacal light is a faint column of light extending up from the horizon - it is sunlight reflected towards Earth by a cloud of dust particles in orbit around the sun. The NASA Juno probe, which was launched in 2011 to orbit Jupiter, serendipitously detected dust particles slamming into the spacecraft on the way aroundthe gas giant. The impacts of the dust particles provided important clues to the origin and orbital evolution of the dust, resolving some mysterious variations of the zodiacal light.

It was known to stem from dust moving in the plane of our solar system. The Juno spacecraft has found that Mars might be the source of the dust. From Northern Hemisphere locations, in the weeks and months around the equinox, you can look west each evening after true darkness falls toward a mysterious hazy pyramid of light. It’s called the zodiacal light, and you can see it from the Southern Hemisphere, too; from there, at this time of year, you’d look east before dawn.
